Third-Party IM Clients: Pidgin

Your email accounts now have the option for built-in chat. This can be used by all users of the same domain to keep all communication internal. Any chat client that support this protocol can be used with SmarterMail. This document includes instructions for using Pidgin - the client used by our team within the office.

This client can be downloaded via https://www.pidgin.im/download/

Set up Pidgin for XMPP

Follow these steps to connect SmarterMail chat to Pidgin:

  1. Open Pidgin.
  2. Click the Accounts menu and click Manage Accounts.
  3. Click Add.
  4. In the Protocol field, select XMPP.
  5. In the Username field, enter your SmarterMail username. For example, jsmith.
  6. In the Domain field, enter your domain, such as example.com.
  7. In the Password field, enter the password used to log in to SmarterMail.
  8. Select the Remember password checkbox.
  9. Click the Advanced tab.
  10. In the Connection Security field, select Use encryption if available.
  11. Select the Allow plain text auth over unencrypted streams checkbox.
  12. Click Add.

Additional Settings:

- Connect Port: 5222
- Connect Server: mail.stablerack.com
